Vietnam’s Economic Liberalization & YKVN’s Early Roots
Vietnam’s Đổi Mới reforms in 1987 sparks market liberalization, with new laws on investment, land, and labor, accelerating economic growth and enabling the re-establishment of diplomatic relations with the USA and entry into ASEAN.
Entering the 1990s, Vietnam begins a cycle of rapid economic expansion, achieving an average GDP growth rate of 6-7% over the next three decades.
During this foundational period, YKVN’s roots are established as our founding partners engaged in Vietnam’s nascent legal market, culminating in the firm’s founding in 1999.
Early 1990s
Laying the Foundation for YKVN’s Legacy
YKVN’s roots trace back to pivotal moments in Vietnam’s evolving legal landscape even before the firm’s official establishment. One of our senior partner significantly contributed to the drafting of the Petroleum Law, a cornerstone in the nation’s economic development, as documented in The History of the Petroleum Industry in Vietnam. This influential work in shaping energy legislation not only showcased the firm’s foundational expertise but also set the stage for YKVN’s future impact on Vietnam’s legal framework.
Building upon this groundwork, YKVN achieved notable milestones that shaped corporate and financial law in Vietnam. In 1997, the firm played a key role in the restructuring of Procter & Gamble Vietnam, marking a significant advancement in corporate negotiations within the country. The following year, in 1998, YKVN contributed to the London Club debt restructuring, facilitating Vietnam’s issuance of “Brady bonds.” These landmark transactions underscore YKVN’s integral role in the nation’s legal and economic development.
By its establishment in 1999, YKVN was already a leader in legal innovation, poised to shape Vietnam’s legal and economic transformation.
